Historical Chronology

The definitive history of The Freemen Collective, born in the dead asteroid claims of Pyro.

Circa 2550s

The Descent of Pyrotechnic Amalgamated

Operating in the brutal, highly radioactive Pyro system, the megacorporation bleeds cash as early veins dry up. To artificially inflate their stock, they drastically slash safety budgets and heavily enforce "generational contracts"—essentially trapping workers and their children in permanent, unpayable debt.

2554

The First Escape

A rogue, working-class courier pilot known only by the callsign Carver witnesses the lethal conditions of the indentured families. Acting alone, she smuggles the first two indentured children out of an active site, cramming them into her battered RSI Aurora. Unable to leave the system without triggering corporate scanners, they are forced to live off the grid, surviving on rationed oxygen in the dark.

2555

The Hijacking of The Finch

During a localized mine collapse, Carver uses the chaos to hijack a top-of-the-line RSI Apollo Medivac intended to evacuate corporate VIPs. To hide the stolen asset, she and the rescued kids hastily paint it using scavenged hazard-orange and slate-grey industrial primer. They re-designate the heavily shielded ship as The Finch.

2556

The Plushie Safe Houses & The Code

Hiding The Finch inside a hollowed-out asteroid claim, the youngest children build a sanctuary out of scavenged plushies in a bypassed maintenance closet. Sitting on the floor of this hidden room, Carver and the teenagers draft the founding tenets of the Code. The absolute first rule established: A Freeman always helps another Freeman in need.

2557 - 2562

The Shadow Net (The Static)

The Freemen hack hidden, encrypted partitions into local UEE Comm-Arrays. Smugglers pulse micro-burst data packets to these arrays when a safe house is loaded. To corporate security, it looks like meaningless background radiation. The indentured families begin referring to this phantom rescue network as "The Static".

2563

The Great Exodus

Pyrotechnic Amalgamated officially declares bankruptcy and abandons the Pyro system entirely, leaving their remaining workforce locked in the stations to die. Using the chaos, Carver and a flotilla of allied smugglers execute a massive, system-wide extraction, rescuing hundreds of the remaining indentured children before vanishing into the deep black.

2564 - 2792

The Messer Era Shadows & The Ledgers

As the UEE descends into fascist dictatorship, The Freemen remain a deeply hidden, nomadic flotilla operating on the fringes of the empire. During this time, they develop "The Carver Ledger"—an encrypted system to track verified kin—and "The Hunt", a blacklist for those who betrayed the Code.

2792

The False Disbandment

The citizens of the UEE overthrow the Messer regime. The Advocacy and historians assume that The Freemen have formally disbanded and integrated back into society. The Freemen encourage this assumption, scrubbing their signatures from the network and fading entirely into a ghost story to protect their independence.

2956 (Modern Era)

The Freemen Collective Today

Today, the Collective operates exactly as Carver designed it centuries ago. We claim no central territory, enforce no taxes, and communicate in the ancient slang of the railroad. Hidden deep within Pyro, modern citizens still stumble across ancient plushie rooms—unaware they stand in the birthplace of the verse's most fiercely independent network.
